BANGKOK, Sept 15: Sarawak’s efforts to strengthen regional energy cooperation through its role in the Asean Power Grid have received positive attention from international participants, including representatives from African countries and Thailand.
In a TVS news report, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the matter was highlighted during his participation in a ministerial-level roundtable session with energy leaders and chief executives of oil and gas companies at GASTECH 2026 in Bangkok.
He said the discussions also focused on efforts to develop a more sustainable energy system in response to climate change, including the transition towards a low-carbon economy.
“I raised the issue of Sarawak’s role in the Asean Power Grid, and secondly, how we develop energy in light of the changing circumstances brought about by climate change.
“We must progress based on decarbonisation programmes and continue our efforts to share energy with countries across Asean,” he said when met after the GASTECH 2026 Fireside Chat here on Monday (Sept 14).
He said these developments could open up greater opportunities for Sarawak to strengthen its energy cooperation networks with countries in the region and internationally.
Meanwhile, Abang Johari said his participation in GASTECH 2026 also provided an opportunity to exchange views with the organisers on the direction of Sarawak’s economy.
He said interactions with energy industry players and ASEAN partners were important in enabling Sarawak to gain new input and adapt its development strategies to changes in the global energy landscape.
“I am confident that our meeting here will, to some extent, provide us with new input and also enable us to align our direction with our partners in ASEAN,” he said.
Sarawak’s participation in GASTECH 2026 demonstrates the State’s commitment to playing a greater role in the regional energy security, decarbonisation and economic development agenda. — DayakDaily
