KUCHING, Feb 21: Evolving Sustainability Group (ES Group), a leading carbon project developer founded by Sarawakian startup Evolving Brilliance Technologies Sdn Bhd (EB Tech), has officially partnered with Yayasan Konservasi Pesisir Indonesia (YAKOPI) to drive nature-based carbon credit initiatives in Indonesia.
The collaboration, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Jakarta, Indonesia, on February 15, aims to restore and conserve ecosystems in Sulawesi and Pulau Nias.
According to a press release, the partnership will focus on generating and certifying carbon credits through nature-based solutions (NBS), including mangrove restoration, afforestation, agroforestry, and wetland conservation.
These efforts are expected to enhance carbon sequestration, mitigate coastal erosion, and integrate sustainable agricultural practices.
“By leveraging ES Group’s technical expertise in carbon project development and YAKOPI’s proven community-based conservation approach, the collaboration aims to enhance carbon offset opportunities while empowering local communities,” the statement read.
Adding further depth to the initiative, the University of Malaya (UM) has joined forces with ES Group and YAKOPI to contribute academic expertise in carbon accounting, feasibility studies, and project monitoring. This collaboration ensures that the projects align with international carbon credit standards and are backed by scientific research and data-driven methodologies.
Beyond environmental benefits, YAKOPI will implement initiatives such as providing alternative livelihoods for retired fishermen through carbon credit revenue; promoting sustainable economic activities like palm sugar production, waste upcycling, and mangrove batik painting; and facilitating employment and training programs in conservation efforts.
“This partnership represents an exciting step forward in scaling sustainable carbon projects across Southeast Asia,” said ES Group chief executive officer and director Moses L. Vinsien.
“With EB Tech’s expertise, YAKOPI’s community engagement, and UM’s academic backing, we are building a framework for long-term environmental and social impact.”
Founded in Sarawak, EB Tech has rapidly expanded its sustainability initiatives beyond Malaysia, now reaching Thailand, Taiwan, and Indonesia.
This latest partnership underscores the growing role of Malaysian startups in the international carbon market, positioning Sarawak as a key player in global decarbonisation efforts. – DayakDaily
