KUCHING, Aug 30: Sarawakians have been encouraged to protect the rights and interests of their State with the same dedication as they would care for their own families.

In stating this, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs and UKAS) Datuk Abdullah Saidol also called on them to be proud of being part of a multi-racial Malaysia.

“Bersatu kita teguh, bercerai kita roboh (United we stand, divided we fall).

“If we move forward alone, we will move fast. But if we move forward together, our destination and vision would be far-sighted,” he said in a National Day message today.

He further said it is the responsibility of Sarawakians and Malaysians in general, to build the best future for the generations to come.

Embracing the spirit of patriotism, Abdullah also mentioned that the theme of this year’s National Day celebration ‘Jiwa Merdeka’ has a very deep meaning which could be interpreted in various contexts.

He explained that the theme reflects Malaysians who dream of big-hearted leaders who would prioritise beyond the interests of our homeland, race and religion.

It also means that citizens want to be independent or free from weak leadership, lack of integrity and destructive political practices.

“In other countries, we know that there are various conflicts and human rights issues. Do we want such situation to happen in our country?

“Jiwa (soul)…we want our soul and mind to always be calm to enjoy a peaceful life.

“Merdeka (free)…we want our lives to be free from being colonised or manipulated by various elements and negative sentiments,” he added. — DayakDaily
