KUCHING, Nov 29: A Sibu-based company has invented the “Wondaleaf Hammock Wheelchair” which uses an innovative wheelchair design to help caregivers move bedridden patients without manually carrying them.

Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the invention has been selected as a finalist for the Lexus Design Award 2022.

“The project received initial funding support from the Sarawak Research and Development Council (SRDC).

“SRDC will continue to support the project to enable trials in hospitals. As much as I laud the innovation, I hope that none of us will ever have to use one ourselves,” he said when presenting his ministerial winding-up speech in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today.

At a press conference later, Sagah said the wheelchair invention proves the potential of Sarawakian innovativeness.

“They have already come up with a new wheelchair which can be easily used to carry patients so that we don’t have to lift them anymore.

“This also received an award in the international arena. This means ‘Sarawak pun lebih dari boleh’ (Sarawak is more than capable),” he pointed out. — DayakDaily
