KUCHING, May 25: Sarawakian athletes performed well in national and international sports events this year, most notably at the Malaysia Games (Sukma).
This includes shotput athlete Jonah Chang Rigan set a national under-20 record of 18.6 metres and is currently in Germany preparing for the World Junior Championship 2022 in Cali, Columbia. Meanwhile archer Bryson Ting Tiew Luing won bronze in the Men’s Team Recurve 2022 at Phuket, Thailand in conjunction with the Asia Cup Series Stage 1 2022 held on March 14 to 19, 2022.
Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah revealed today in his winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here that Sarawak’s contingent won three gold medals, one silver medal, and one bronze medal at the National Youth, Junior, and Senior Weightlifting Championship in Melaka which was held from March 14 to 19.
“A total number of 13 athletes represented the Sarawak contingent and they won three gold, three silver, and three bronze medals during the National Elite, Senior, and Junior Muaythai Championship 2022, held in Kelantan from March 17 to 20, 2022.
“Our Sarawakian athletes have also won 15 gold, four silver, and three bronze medals in the 56th Milo/Pram Malaysia Invitational Age Group Diving Competition 2022, held in Ipoh, Perak from April 22 to 23, 2022.
“Additionally, our football team under the Sports Development Programme has also been involved in the President’s Cup 2022 League and the Youth Cup 2022 League,” he said. — DayakDaily
