KUCHING, June 28: Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd has been criticised for its ‘lack of diversity’ over its recent appointment of its new board of directors.

In a press statement, activist Peter John Jaban, along with several non-governmental organisations (NGOs), said that while the company’s core business and responsibilities remain unchanged, the makeup of the new board of directors raises questions about inclusivity and representation.

“In a diverse and multiracial State like Sarawak, this lack of diversity is not only disappointing, but also unacceptable,” he said.

He further clarified that his words were not meant to attack anyone, adding that Sarawak belongs to everyone, and its institutions must reflect that.

Elaborating on that, he said Sarawak is home to professionals and leaders across all communities who have contributed to the State’s progress, and excluding them from leadership positions in key institutions is a disservice not only to them but also to the very idea of Sarawakian unity and equality.

“Sarawak has always prided itself on being a model of harmony and mutual respect among its many ethnic and religious groups. That spirit must also be reflected in the composition of leadership in public institutions.

“We urge the State government and all relevant authorities to reassess the current board structure of Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd and to take concrete steps to restore balance, diversity, and inclusiveness. Appointments must reflect not just competence, but also the diversity of the rakyat,” he said. — DayakDaily
