KUCHING, Dec 2: Sarawak Unity Education Fund (SUEF) has presented 10 brand new laptops to Curtin University to support local Sarawakian students in need, specifically targeting those with financial challenges.

The laptops presented were donated by MACO (Medical Awareness Camp Outreach), a national non-governmental organisation (NGO) known for donating over 7,000 laptops to 300 schools across Malaysia.

According to a press release, Lee who is also the chairman of Curtin Malaysia Management Committee, expressed his gratitude on behalf of the university for the contribution.

“These students were selected based on their financial backgrounds. We deeply appreciate the Sarawak Unity Education Fund for their generosity and commitment to supporting our youth,” he said.

Lee also highlighted that the initiative aligns with the Sarawak government’s broader goals of nurturing homegrown talent and equipping the State for emerging economic opportunities in the digital economy and green technology.

Sarawak has invested heavily in education, including establishing five international schools and owning four higher education institutions: Curtin University in Miri, University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) in Sibu, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, and ICATS in Kuching.

By 2026, the State plans to offer free university education for Sarawakian students enrolled in approved courses at these institutions.

Established nearly two years ago, the SUEF has quickly gained momentum, with this laptop donation marking its first major program.

The Fund has pledged and collected RM3.6 million to provide scholarships and financial aid to needy students, irrespective of race, provided they meet university admission criteria.

Applications for the 2025 Scholarship and Study Award Programme are now open to Sarawakian students pursuing full-time diplomas or first-degree courses.
