KUCHING, Aug 24: The Sarawak government will examine international protocols related to carbon trading to ensure that the carbon trading policy is properly implemented.
According to a TVS report, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stated that there is currently no clear specifics on carbon imports and exports in the State.
Therefore, according to the Premier, Sarawak will work with oil and gas companies to study the development of carbon capture and storage (CCS).
“I will meet with Shell in London. We can work with oil companies for things involving CCS development.
“There is no clear protocol in terms of export and import of carbon to be stored in our State,” he said.
The Premier made the remarks at a dinner organised by Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) at Hotel Norge in Bergen, Norway, on Wednesday (Aug 23).
Earlier, Abang Johari led a Sarawak government delegation to Norway for a two-day working visit to CCS facilities in Bergen and Oslo, including the CCS Northern Lights facility.
The Premier will meet with Shell stakeholders in London as part of his working tour of Europe to discuss CCS development.
Meanwhile, he has called on industry players, particularly those from Norway, who are interested in establishing a CCS facility in Sarawak.
“Perhaps you can go to Sarawak and build a facility there together with us, at least in principle,” he said. — DayakDaily
