KUCHING, Sept 7: Sarawak is prioritising the expansion of its road network to connect rural areas, aiming to enhance the quality of life for its rural population.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas highlighted the State government’s commitment to exploring innovative, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly road construction materials that offer increased durability and reduced maintenance requirements.
Many rural villages in Sarawak currently lack road connectivity and remain inaccessible. Uggah revealed that there are 1,282 kilometers of roads in rural Sarawak with no connectivity and 2,130 kilometers accessible only through active logging roads.
The government’s post Covid-19 development strategy aims to uplift the livelihoods of rural residents, making road connectivity a top priority.
Uggah, who also serves as the Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, acknowledged the potential of using processed rubber or plastics as road construction materials to promote environmental sustainability.
After attending a seminar titled “Revolutionizing Road and Airport Infrastructure,” where experts like Dr Filippo Giustozzi and Dr Yeong Jia Boom discussed the role of recycled materials in road construction, Uggah expressed interest in exploring these technologies, especially for rural Sarawak.
The seminar provided valuable insights into sustainable and cost-effective methods that can revolutionise infrastructure development.
In an era focused on environmental preservation, finding eco-friendly solutions has become not only a preference but also a necessity, Uggah emphasised. — DayakDaily
