Sarawak to focus on renewable energy, no plans to explore nuclear power to generate electricity

KUCHING, July 17: The Sarawak government will focus on the development of renewable energy sources and rejects any possibility of exploring the nuclear power sector to generate electricity in the State.

According to a report by Sarawak Public Communicationsl Unit (Ukas), Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said as the world responds to the call for the use of sustainable and low-carbon energy sources, renewable energy has emerged as one of the fastest growing sources of energy generation.

According to him, there is a great opportunity for investors to establish cooperation with Sarawak and develop the clean energy generation sector because all new economic activities will depend on renewable energy.

“Why do we need nuclear reactors?

“We have hydropower (to generate electricity), but if the biomass sector, yes.

“Sarawak’s strength is from the renewable energy sector because the world economy has shifted towards a green economy that requires renewable energy due to climate change,” he said during a press conference held after Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) Invest Series—Sarawak 2024 held at MIDA Sentral in Kuala Lumpur today.

Abang Johari also said that if Sarawak is able to generate hydrogen at a more competitive price, Malaysia can become one of the big players in the global hydrogen industry.
