KUCHING, Oct 6: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has assured that the Sarawak government will support Kuching South City Council’s (MBKS) plan to give Malaysia–China Friendship Park (Taman Sahabat) in Jalan Song a facelift once the proposal is ready.
Dr Sim, who is also Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government (MPHLG), noted that Malaysia-China Friendship Park and Rimbunan Hijau (RH) Group—whose building, commonly known as the Chagee building, sits beside the park—have been working together for the past two decades to enhance the area and its facilities.
“Once MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng submits the proposal to me, I will approve it. But before I approve, I will take a proper look before endorsing it.
“Don’t worry, I will definitely help, because Sarawak is my home,” he said when speaking at the Mooncake Festival 2025 celebration held at the park here tonight.
Earlier, Wee described the park as one of the most cherished recreational spaces in Kuching, frequented daily by residents for jogging, tai chi, family outings, dates and casual gatherings—a clear reflection of how deeply the park is loved by the community.
“We are now preparing a proposal to give the park a facelift, including better lighting and some improvement works to make it safer, more comfortable and even more beautiful for everyone to enjoy.
“We will be submitting this proposal soon, and we sincerely hope [Dr Sim] will continue to support us in making this park even better for all Kuching residents,” he said.
Wee also expressed appreciation to Isekai for co-organising the Mooncake Festival with MBKS, describing it as a reflection of the 3Ps—Public, Private and People partnership—that unites the community.
He added that the Mid-Autumn or Mooncake Festival has become a celebration for all races and backgrounds, fostering unity and friendship through shared traditions.
The celebration at Friendship Park saw hundreds of residents and families gathering under the full moon to enjoy cultural performances, lantern processions and the sharing of mooncakes.
Among those present was MBKS deputy mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili. — DayakDaily
