KUCHING, July 15: Sarawak has begun testing its first green hydrogen station at the second PETROS Multifuel Station in Batu Kawa, marking a major milestone in the State’s hydrogen economy and clean energy ambitions.
According to Sarawak Deputy Premier and Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, the green hydrogen is produced off-site at Darul Hana, with the station catering to petrol, electric vehicle (EV), and hydrogen-powered vehicles.
Dr Sim noted that the facility’s full opening is currently pending final paperwork approval from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) in Kuala Lumpur.
“SEDC Energy (SEDCE) is responsible for laying the groundwork for Sarawak’s hydrogen economy.
“While hydrogen refuelling points are not yet profit-making, they remain essential for SEDCE’s pilot initiatives and ongoing operational improvements.
“As it stands, hydrogen-fuelled vehicles are almost exclusively commercial units operating under pilot projects,” he said in a Facebook post today.
He also tested the station himself by fuelling a Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle with 2kg of hydrogen in just three minutes. The 5kg tank allows the vehicle to travel up to 700km.
The car, he noted, was not purchased but provided as part of a green energy appreciation gesture by UMW Toyota to the Sarawak Premier and Deputy Premiers.
“Hydrogen (H₂) converts to H₂O water when it combines with oxygen (O₂) to create power in its fuel-cell (battery).
“As such, a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle using green hydrogen emits only water vapour from its exhaust, instead of conventional pollutants such as carbon dioxide (CO₂), nitrous oxide, and methane. These gases contribute up to 21 per cent of total emissions driving climate change,” he explained.
Dr Sim extended his thanks to SEDC Energy and Petronas’s Lestari H2Gaas for the briefing and progress update. — DayakDaily
