KUCHING, Sept 15: The Sarawak government is considering a proposal by the Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) to develop a new building to serve as a hostel and activity centre for its members, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed.
He said the proposed site could be strategically located in Kota Samarahan near the upcoming Tanjung Embang airport, an area that is rapidly developing into an education hub with multiple universities and training institutions.
“Maybe we can build STU’s hostel near the new airport at Kota Samarahan. The area is already being developed as an education hub with universities and institutions nearby, so it will be convenient for your members,” he said when delivering his speech at the gala dinner in conjunction with STU’s Diamond Jubilee, held last night (Sept 14) at a hotel here.
The event was broadcast live via the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) YouTube channel.
Abang Johari added that the location would benefit STU members travelling from outside Kuching as improved connectivity and new bridges will reduce travel time between Kuching and Kota Samarahan to just 20 minutes.
“With the new road network, bridges and the upcoming airport, travel between Kuching and Kota Samarahan will only take about 20 minutes. This makes it an ideal location,” he said.
The Premier emphasised that the State government remains committed to supporting STU with facilities and land where possible.
“Whatever I can assist STU with, I will help to make it happen. If you have land and a building, it must come as a package. I want STU to have a place that is modern and useful for its members,” he assured.
To further mark STU’s 60th anniversary, Abang Johari also announced a RM60,000 allocation for the union to support its welfare programmes and activities.
“Tonight, in honour of STU’s 60 years, I am announcing an allocation of RM60,000 for your programmes. Whatever you choose to do with it, it must benefit the members,” he declared. — DayakDaily
