SIBU, Oct 8: Sarawak aims to tap into the emerging Low Altitude Economy (LAE) powered by drone technology to unlock new potentials in logistics, agriculture, infrastructure monitoring and digital services, including proposed initiatives such as delivery of medical supplies to rural clinics.
According to Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report, Sarawak envisions positioning itself as a regional leader in developing a safe, innovative, and responsible drone ecosystem.
Minister for Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the low-altitude economy, driven by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) technologies, could serve as a new catalyst for Sarawak’s economic growth, especially in improving connectivity and service delivery to remote areas that currently rely on small aircraft operating at STOLports.
“The development of the LAE not only supports Sarawak’s broader economic transformation agenda but also creates new employment opportunities while strengthening delivery systems and public services in rural regions.
“Among the proposed initiatives are the delivery of medical supplies to rural clinics, agricultural monitoring, mapping and environmental protection, and community air mobility trials using eVTOL prototypes,” he said.

He highlighted this when officiating at the Central Zone Aviation Safety Seminar 2025, themed “Safe and Secure Skies: Building a Responsible Drone Ecosystem” held at the Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Chancellor Hall, Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) here today.
Lee noted that countries such as China, Singapore, and those in the European Union have already launched major pilot projects in this field, and Sarawak is now well-positioned to adopt similar strategies through strong governance and strategic collaboration among the government, academia, and industry.
Organised by the Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS) in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) and UTS, the seminar aimed to raise awareness of aviation safety and strengthen understanding of responsible drone usage in Sarawak. — DayakDaily
