KUCHING, Aug 22: Sarawakian swimmer Kelly Teo Yau delivered a stellar performance today at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre, capturing her fifth gold medal in the women’s 400-metre freestyle at the 21st Malaysian Games (Sukma) 2024.
Teo dominated the race with a time of 4:31.85, outpacing Selangor’s Khiew Zi Xian, who secured silver with a time of 4:34.26. Sabah’s Chu Xin Ying took the bronze, finishing with a time of 4:38.05.
Teo’s teammate, Magdalene Lau Ing Siew, narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth with a time of 4:39.16.
This latest victory added to Teo’s already impressive haul of four gold medals, which she earned in the 200-metre freestyle, 400-metre individual medley, 200-metre backstroke, and 800-metre freestyle events.
In addition to her gold medals, the 18-year-old swimming sensation also claimed a silver medal in the 4×200 metre freestyle relay, alongside teammates Chereen Ngo Yi Rui, Magdalene Lau Ing Siew, and Shanice Jauwa Joseline Adong, with a time of 8:52.19.
Teo further added to her medal tally with a bronze in the 4×100 metre medley relay, teaming up with Jeff Chua Yu Yang, Hii Puong Wei, and Magdalene Lau Ing Siew to clock in at 4:09.15.
Looking ahead, Teo is set to compete in three more events tomorrow (Aug 23): the 100-metre backstroke, 50-metre freestyle, and women’s 1500-metre freestyle, where she will aim to extend her remarkable medal count at Sukma 2024. — DayakDaily
