KUCHING, Nov 4: Sarawak is actively collaborating with international research institutions to develop climate adaptation strategies that consider aerosol-climate interactions, which are crucial for predicting rainfall patterns, extreme weather events and forest health.
In stating this, Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Sarawak’s unique geographical landscape provides an opportunity to study the effects of aerosols on climate change and atmospheric processes.
He also said Sarawak has focused on initiatives that directly address aerosol-related environmental and health issues.
“Monitoring and mitigating transboundary haze is a key priority. Through cross-border collaboration and early warning systems, we aim to safeguard air quality and reduce the health risks associated with haze episodes.
“Additionally, sustainable biomass management is another priority. By converting agricultural waste into bioenergy, we aim to reduce the emissions of harmful aerosols, contributing to global efforts to reduce carbon footprints and improve air quality,” he said in his keynote speech at the 13th Asian Aerosol Conference (AAC) 2024 at a hotel here today. His speech text was read out by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
