KUCHING, June 18: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has called upon the Sarawak civil service to support his administration in exploring new ways to manage the region’s economy.
“God has given us so many resources so of course we should give value to our resources by exploring the latest technology so that it can provide income to the State and the country as a whole,” he said during the ‘Majlis Sekalung Budi Sarawak 2023’ event livestreamed by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) on Facebook earlier tonight.
He explained that the Sarawak government is currently putting emphasis on the new economy based on green energy where in the last three years, he had introduced new initiatives such as carbon trading, hydrogen and microalgae.
These, he said, are important, especially in mitigating climate change.
“China has recorded temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius and some habitats in other countries are now under threat due to climate change.
“That is why I believe we should explore so that we can more or less contribute in cooling down (the earth) by making sure there is not much carbon emission that leads to a hotter environment.
“Thus, I urge the civil service to be together with the Sarawak government to explore new ways in managing our economy,” he added.
In his address, Abang Johari pointed out that federal and Sarawak civil servants have close cooperation which has been proven to be true in managing the State’s fight against the Covid-19 outbreak.
“During Covid-19, I, together with Lieutenant General Datuk Mardzuki Muhammad (the former commander of the Army Eastern Field Command), went to the rural areas near the border to resolve Covid-19 issues.
“Additionally, the Health Department was working closely with the Sarawak government so that we can serve together in ensuring the safety of our people from Covid-19.
“Thus, on behalf of the government, I wish to thank all of you for your contribution in solving Covid-19 problems in Sarawak. There was indeed a great team in Sarawak during the pandemic,” he emphasised.
The event also witnessed Abang Johari presenting a token of appreciation from the Sarawak government to Mardzuki, former Sarawak Immigration director Datu Ken Leben; former permanent secretary to Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datu Antonio Kahti Galis; and former Malaysian Third Infantry Brigade commander Brig-Gen Mohd Kamil Abdul Latiff.
