KUCHING, Sept 24: Sarawak has been confirmed to host 16 sporting events for the 2027 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, with the possibility of one or more additional events being added.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said while 16 events have been officially confirmed, requests from participating countries may see two or three new sports included, potentially giving Sarawak an extra event.
“The confirmed list currently includes 16 sports for the upcoming SEA Games.
“However, we are open to adding more events as requested by the participating nations,” he told reporters after launching the Borneo Games Kuching (BGK) 2025 at the Indoor Stadium in Petra Jaya today.
Among the approved sports are archery, aquatics, shooting, tenpin bowling, taekwondo, tennis, squash, cricket, Muay Thai, weightlifting, and others.
On facilities, Abdul Karim revealed that the next major project is the construction of a velodrome, which has received approval from the Sarawak government.
“This initiative aims to enhance cycling events and further develop local athletes.
“This is part of our efforts to elevate cycling competitions, as our developmental cyclists are currently among the best in Malaysia, particularly our junior athletes,” he added.— DayakDaily
