Sarawak sees record high 426 Covid-19 cases, Serian yields 203

KUCHING, Feb 28: Sarawak hit a record high of 426 new Covid-19 cases today with Serian making the headlines with a surge of 203 cases.

State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said today’s figure was the highest daily total ever in Sarawak and the sudden surge in Serian was due to 191 cases detected at the Semuja Immigration Depot Centre.


Other districts recording new Covid-19 cases were Bintulu (72), Kuching (41), Sibu (31), Miri (21), Samarahan (13), Julau (11), Song (8), Kapit (6), Pakan (3), Sarikei (3), Sebauh (3), Sri Aman (3), Kanowit (2), Meradong (2), Betong (1), Limbang (1), Mukah (1) and Selangau (1).

With this, the cumulative number of Covid-19 cases in Sarawak now stands at 15,869.

“In brief, 224 cases were individual screenings from existing active clusters where one showed signs and symptoms of Covid-19 infection.

“Another 149 cases were detected following close contact screenings where 16 of them were symptomatic,” Uggah revealed during a press conference here to give updates on the Covid-19 situation in Sarawak today.

Adding on, he said 28 cases were discovered via other screenings in health facilities, 15 cases from symptomatic tests in health facilities and 10 were Import-B cases who returned from other states in Malaysia.

Sarawak also saw two Covid-19 fatalities today, involving a 77-year-old and a 63-year-old, both Sarawakian males, in Sibu who had histories of co-morbidities.

Meanwhile, Uggah revealed, there are 2,882 patients who receiving treatment in hospitals across the state. — DayakDaily
