KUCHING, Nov 16: Sarawak has a potential of about 3 gigawatts (GW) of cascading hydro capacity according to preliminary studies across selected sites.

In stating this, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg explained that the Cascading Dam Initiative involves smaller, environmentally friendly structures that use natural river gradients to generate hydroelectric power.

“The first pilot project will be at Sungai Gaat in Kapit, where the local community has agreed in principle to participate.

“Preliminary studies show that across selected sites, Sarawak has a potential of about 3 gigawatts of cascading hydro capacity,” he said in a speech text read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian during Sarawak Rivers Day 2025 event today.

He further said the model allows community equity participation, giving local residents 5 to 10 percent ownership through a community trust.

“Revenue from clean energy will therefore return to the people, funding education, infrastructure and social development,” he added.

Each project, he said, will undergo thorough environmental and social impact assessments to safeguard ecosystems, water quality and community welfare.

“These cascading dams will produce clean power, improve navigation and even help regulate river flows and wildlife habitats, proving that innovation and conservation can go hand in hand,” he elaborated.

The initiative is part of Sarawak’s broader Green Economy and Energy Transition Strategy, with the State already producing over 60 percent of electricity from hydropower and targeting 10GW of renewable capacity by 2030. – DayakDaily
