KUCHING, Oct 30: Sarawak, Sabah, Pahang and Terengganu have been identified as potential leaders in the carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) industry in Malaysia, given the availability of unused oil wells and existing terminal facilities suitable for carbon-related activities.

In a news report by TVS, Economic Minister Rafizi Ramli expressed confidence that Sarawak is well-positioned to be a key player in the CCUS sector, not just in Malaysia but across the broader region.

“I am pleased that everyone involved is on the right track, as CCUS is a high-tech initiative. If we succeed in the next five years, Malaysia can create high-paying job opportunities and establish itself as a leader in the energy transition,” he said.

Additionally, Rafizi highlighted that both the federal and state governments involved will act as facilitators between CCUS industry operators, such as Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), and their customers, including foreign investors.

He made these remarks following a stakeholders engagement session between the Federal and Sarawak governments, which was attended by Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, among others, at Wisma Bapa Malaysia today.

During the engagement session, discussion centered on CCUS legislation, with focus on harmonising state and federal laws in preparation for the upcoming Federal legislation.

Rafizi emphasised that the aim of the session was to finalise the CCUS bill before it is presented in Parliament by the end of the year.

“The Sarawak government has its own regulations regarding CCUS under State law. Therefore, today’s engagement focused on harmonising these laws in to ensure that Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole can implement CCUS as swiftly as possible,” he added.

The Federal government had previously held similar sessions with Pahang, Terengganu, and Sabah. ā€” DayakDaily
