KUCHING, Jan 14: The crowd erupted into thunderous applause for Datin Patinggi Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang, wife of Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, in recognition of her unwavering support for her husband, during a townhall session at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre (HEEC) last night (Jan 13).

During the session, Abang Johari was asked by moderator Dr Aila Abdul Latif about the role of his wife as his backbone, especially in navigating the complexities of political challenges and party conflicts.

The Premier, visibly moved, expressed his gratitude for his wife’s understanding and steadfast support throughout his political journey.

“I am deeply grateful to have an understanding wife. Thus, I want to thank my wife.

“She understands the pressures of politics, having grown up with a father who was a politician and founder of the now-defunct Barisan Rakyat Jati Sarawak (Berjasa) party. She has the experience,” he said.

Reflecting on his early political career, Abang Johari recounted a personal moment when the late Tun Abdul Rahman Ya’kub, former Sarawak Chief Minister, asked him to stand as a candidate.

Initially hesitant, Abang Johari suggested that Tun Rahman find someone else.

Later, at home, his father-in-law asked about the meeting.

“When told that Tun Rahman wanted me to run, my father-in-law simply said, ‘Did Amni (his wife) approve or not? It’s up to both of you since Amni has experience in politics.’

“So, my wife just followed along, and in fact, she supported me. The harmony between us has kept us strong, and we’ve made it through together,” he said with a smile.

In that heartfelt moment, the audience in the hall stood in unison, rising to their feet in a resounding standing ovation and applause for Juma’ani.

In a separate event held earlier that day, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, speaking at the Majlis Amanat Perdana at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), also highlighted Juma’ani’s crucial contributions.

“Some might say there’s always a lady behind a great man, but I believe she doesn’t stay behind—she stands together with him.

“Thus, Datin Patinggi Datuk Amar Juma’ani, we thank you for your sacrifices, your time, and your understanding.

“I’m sure you have seen a lot of selfies (with Abang Johari) around, but you have never doubted, at any time, the loyalty and strength of your love for Abang Johari. Your support has enabled him to share his time with all of us Sarawakians to bring Sarawak to greater heights,” Uggah said.

The acknowledgment drew warm applause from the audience, underscoring the admiration for Juma’ani’s invaluable contributions to Sarawak’s leadership. — DayakDaily
