KUCHING, July 21: The largest ever Sarawak Open Bonsai & Suiseki Championship collections at La Promenade Mall will be launched at 11.30am on July 23.
According to a statement circulated to the media, the event is expected to be officiated by the Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
It also stated that the championship will be judged by a combination of specialists from the Malaysia Bonsai and Suiseki Society (MBSS) and the Sarawak Association and two experts from Taiwan, the executive supervisor of the Taiwan Bonsai Creator Association and the Yunlin Bonsai & Suiseki Association, Zhang Yong Shou, and the grand champion of the Changhua Bonsai & Suiseki Exhibition and a recent judge at the 2023 Asia Pacific Bonsai & Suiseki Expo Xu Rong Chang.
There will be activities throughout the week from July 20 to July 30, such as Bonsai demos, Chinese Music Performances and Chinese Calligraphy and drawing.
Bonsai enthusiasts in the city are in for a big treat and are welcome to see about 185 plants for the competition, displayed at the mall in specific set-up exhibition spaces, indoors and outdoors.
There will be demonstrations of Bonsai plants by experts from Sarawak, Peninsula Malaysia and Taiwan.
As for the “Suiseki” or “water stone” enthusiasts, there will also be many collections showcased in the championship.
Suiseki in Japanese is a generic term for naturally shaped stones or rocks collected and appreciated for aesthetic qualities.
