KUCHING, March 22: Sarawak needs an extra 5,037 teachers, according to the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) records as of Jan 18.
Education Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Radzi Jidin said a total of 1,674 teachers have been posted to Sarawak since Dec 1, 2021.
“This was a result of the government’s efforts to overcome the shortage of teachers at all schools under the supervision of MOE, including Sarawak.
“In the Igan constituency in particular, 30 teachers have been posted to meet the needs of the workforce,” he said in a written reply to a question by Igan MP Ahmad Johnie Zawawi in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday.
To fill in the shortage of educators at schools nationwide, Radzi pointed out that the MOE had on June 20, 2021 announced a special intake for 18,702 Grade DG41 education service officers on a “one-off” basis.
Of the total of applicants, he said 13,760 candidates were successful in the interview sessions conducted by the Education Service Commission.
“There are 121 vacancies in the Igan constituency,” he added. — DayakDaily
