Sarawak Museum Dept, British Museum sign MoU to study Borneo, Sarawak artefacts

LONDON, Nov 7: The Sarawak Museum Department has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the British Museum in London to embark on the study of Borneo and Sarawak artefacts housed in museums across the United Kingdom (UK) and at the Sarawak Museum.

According to a press release, the MOU was signed by Sarawak Museum Director Nancy Jolhi and British Museum Director Dr Nicholas Cullinan in a ceremony held at the British Museum yesterday (Nov 6).

The event was witnessed by prominent figures, including Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah; Deputy Minister of Tourism, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew; and MTCP permanent secretary Datu Sherrina Hussaini.

“This agreement, focused on the study of Borneo and Sarawak artefacts housed in museums across the UK and at the Sarawak Museum, paves the way for enhanced collaboration between the two esteemed institutions.

“The MoU underscores the Sarawak Museum Department’s commitment to building international partnerships that highlight the unique history and heritage of Sarawak,” it said.

Additionally, the British Museum, one of the most renowned museum institutions in the world, represents a key partner in the Sarawak Museum Department’s vision to expand its global presence.

This collaboration aligns with the department’s strategic goal of becoming a globally engaged centre of history and heritage by 2030.

This agreement will facilitate joint research initiatives, exhibitions, and cultural exchanges aimed at advancing the field of museology and promoting a deeper understanding of Borneo’s rich history and heritage. — DayakDaily
