KUCHING, June 12: Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd (Sarawak Metro), backed by nearly five years experience in operating Southeast Asia’s first hydrogen bus passenger service, is fully prepared to operate and maintain the Kuching Urban Tranportation System’s (KUTS) future fleet of green hydrogen-powered autonomous rapid transit (ART) vehicles and feeder buses.
Speaking at the Asia Pacific Green Hydrogen (APGH) 2024 Conference and Exhibition on Tuesday (June 11), chief executive officer Ts Mazli Mustaffa emphasised that running the trial operations of the hydrogen buses have provided Sarawak Metro with invaluable experience and insights into operating zero emissions vehicles for public transport.
“As of today, we have accumulated nearly five years of unique experience in the operations and maintenance of these hydrogen-powered public transport vehicles – the first ones in operation in Southeast Asia,” he said when presenting a case study on the KUTS Project.
With experience in operating and maintaining hydrogen bus passenger service in Kuching since 2020, Mazli reiterated Sarawak Metro’s commitment to transforming Kuching’s public transportation system through the adoption of the hydrogen-powered ART.
“With a range of 300km, and zero emissions, our hydrogen buses are the perfect companion to our ART system,” he said.
According to a press release today, Mazli also highlighted that Sarawak Metro will procure 55 more hydrogen buses to serve as feeder buses, providing the ‘first and last mile connectivity’ for commuters travelling on the ART.
He also informed the conference audience that the ART, the backbone of the KUTS project, will have a capacity of 250 passengers and will run on virtual tracks on a dedicated lane.
In addition to presenting the case study on the KUTS Project, Mazli participated as a forum panelist discussing ‘Forging Ahead: Keeping up with the Green Hydrogen Developments in Sarawak’.
The three-day APGH 2024 Conference and Exhibition, held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), brought together industry leaders, experts and stakeholders to discuss the advancements and future of green hydrogen technology in the Asia Pacific region. — DayakDaily
