KUCHING, May 7: Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd has apologised for the inconvenience caused by a recent water supply disruption affecting residents around Jalan Wan Alwi here following accidental damage to a water pipe during construction works for the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) Project.

In a press statement today, Sarawak Metro said the incident occurred on Wednesday (May 6) during works under the KUTS Blue Line Package 2.

The company said it immediately worked closely with the Blue Line Package 2 contractor — a joint venture between Perbena Emas Sdn Bhd and CRBC (M) Holdings Sdn Bhd — as well as Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd to facilitate repair works and restore water supply to the affected area as quickly as possible.

Sarawak Metro acknowledged that such incidents remain a possibility as construction activities intensify, particularly in urban and residential areas where works are being carried out around existing underground utilities and infrastructure.

According to the statement, ongoing works at Jalan Wan Alwi involve the construction of piers for the elevated guideway and a long-span structure crossing a major traffic intersection, which will become one of the key features of the KUTS Project.

The company added that trial pit works and utility relocation activities are necessary components of the construction process.

“Utilities relocation works in the area are expected to be completed within the next three months, subject to site conditions, utilities coordination, traffic management requirements, and approval from the relevant authorities,” it said.

Sarawak Metro said it remains committed to minimising disruptions to public utility services and nearby communities as the KUTS Project progresses into a more active phase of construction.

It added that operational procedures are continuously being reviewed and strengthened to improve coordination among contractors, enhance on-site supervision, and reduce the risk of similar incidents recurring.

Among the measures being implemented are ongoing engagement with utility providers, comprehensive utility mapping, close coordination prior to excavation works near underground pipes and cables, continuous site inspections, risk assessments, as well as emergency response and rectification readiness.

Sarawak Metro also expressed appreciation to government agencies, utility providers, and the public for their cooperation, patience, and continued support as efforts continue to develop a modern and sustainable public transport system for Greater Kuching. — DayakDaily
