KUCHING, June 29: Sarawak may attract attempts by certain quarters to deploy “political weapons” in efforts to destabilise the region over the next five years, warns Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
Delivering the warning during a recent speech, Dr Sim who is also the Deputy Premier of Sarawak, highlighted that Sarawak has made significant strides in its development and autonomy, which may trigger political manoeuvres aimed at undermining its stability.
As an example, he pointed out that despite having a population of only about 2.8 million, Sarawak recorded over RM15 billion in revenue last year—an amount not far behind the approximately RM18 billion reportedly collected by the entire Peninsular Malaysia, which has a population nearing 30 million.
“We need to work hard for the next five years. We need to survive, because during this time, people will definitely try to figure out how to disturb or divide Sarawak.
“It could come in many forms—seizing control of positions, resisting authority, or even manipulating income tax issues. All of these can be used as political tools,” he said during SUPP Kuching Branch’s 66th anniversary dinner held at Theatre Hotel here this evening.
Dr Sim further urged Sarawakians to remain vigilant and united in facing such challenges, emphasising that unity and political stability are crucial to safeguarding Sarawak’s interests and sustaining its development momentum.
Among those present were SUPP deputy president Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin; SUPP Kuching branch chairwoman Datuk Lily Yong; SUPP Kuching Youth chief Nicholas Wung Duk Ying; and SUPP Kuching Women chief Chai Mian Nyen.
