KUCHING, Feb 22: Sarawak is keen to explore opportunities and assess the feasibility of developing and implementing an industrial symbiosis model similar to the one at the Energy Park in Øygarden, Vestland, Norway.
The Energy Park integrates the entire carbon capture and storage (CCS) value chain, featuring a CO₂ reception and storage facility while enabling large-scale hydrogen-based energy production from natural gas with CCS.
Leading a delegation to the Energy Park, Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan sought to explore cutting-edge green industry solutions.
During the visit yesterday (Feb 21), Coast Center Base (CCB) chief executive officer (CEO) Ronny Haufe, presented the industrial symbiosis concept, which fosters a sustainable economic ecosystem by integrating industries within a circular model.
CCB, headquartered in Ågotnes near Bergen, is a key service provider in logistics, maintenance, and support for the oil, gas, and maritime sectors. It also plays a significant role in renewable energy, offshore wind, hydrogen production, and CCS through its CCB Energy Park in Øygarden.
As a major contributor to the Northern Lights CCS project, CCB is advancing Norway’s sustainability and decarbonisation efforts.
In a media release, Awang Tengah emphasised that Sarawak, Malaysia’s largest State, is rich in natural resources and strategically positioned to lead in sustainable energy development.
“With major hydropower projects like the Murum and Bakun dams already supplying clean energy, Sarawak is actively diversifying its economy through hydrogen production and exploring carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) technologies to support a low-carbon future,” he said.
The delegation also toured the Northern Lights facilities, gaining valuable insights into CO₂ storage processes.
With Sarawak’s commitment to green energy and climate solutions aligning with CCB’s expertise, both parties expressed mutual interest in collaborating to accelerate the development of clean energy technologies.
The visit was attended by key Sarawakian officials, including Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Native Law and Customs) Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang, permanent secretary to the Ministry of Natural Resources & Urban Development (MUDeNR) Datu Abdullah Julaihi, permanent secretary to Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED) Dzulkornain Masron, Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) chief executive officer (CEO) Datu Zaidi Mahdi, Regional Corridor Development Authority (Recoda) CEO Datuk Haji Ismawi bin Haji Ismuni, , Economic Planning Unit (EPU) Sarawak director Datu Lester Matthew, and MIDA Stockholm deputy director Khairul Azhar Amil Hamzah. — DayakDaily
