KUCHING, Nov 11: The Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) has unanimously passed the Distribution of Gas (Amendment) Bill 2024.
Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi said the Amendment Bill is introduced to establish a legal framework to regulate the distribution of hydrogen generated in Sarawak using feedstocks produced, obtained or imported into Sarawak, premises to be used for generation or storage of hydrogen, transportation of hydrogen for distribution, and delivery to consumers in Sarawak including for export.
According to Julaihi, the amendment Bill seeks to amend the Principal Ordinance to introduce several key updates such as expanding the definition of ‘gas’ to include hydrogen as a regulated type.
“This includes the introduction of new Part IVA to the Ordinance to specifically regulate activities in relation to hydrogen, a gas which is newly included in the definition of ‘gas’ in the Principal Ordinance,” said Julaihi when tabling the Bill at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.
He said the passing of the Distribution of Gas (Amendment) Bill, 2024, also marks a bold and transformative step forward in Sarawak’s efforts to lead in the hydrogen economy.
He added that the amendment expands the scope of the 2016 Distribution of Gas Ordinance to include hydrogen, allowing Sarawak to create a clear, strong framework for hydrogen generation, storage, distribution, and use across Sarawak. — DayakDaily
