KUCHING, July 12: Sarawak Peoples’ Congress (SPC) and Dayak Interests Group (DIG) will jointly organise a Sarawak Independence Day Summit on July 23 at a hotel in Kuching in conjunction with this year’s Sarawak Independence Day.

Coordinator for the Summit Lina Soo said that the purpose of the Summit is to bring together concerned Sarawakians who care deeply about the challenges faced in a time of “economic chaos and political upheaval”.

“We face unprecedented times in an increasingly divided and polarised society. This Summit will provide a platform to share discourse on current issues and challenges, and engage Sarawakians on the process to move forward,” she said in a media release today.

Soo, who is also Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi) president, informed that the topics of national interest to be broached include Malaysia Agreement, freedom of religion, economic rights of Sarawak oil and gas, Dayak interests and challenges, and current political trends.

Invited speakers are Siti Kasim (activist lawyer), Roger Chin (president of Sabah Law Society), Yusuf Abdul Rahman (Honorary Secretary of Suarah Petroleum Group) and George Young (social activist).

Soo is also expected to share the platform with the lawyers to speak on the symbolism of Sarawak Independence Day, while a university student Mohamed Hyypia Rosmaini will articulate on Sarawak young generations’ hopes and aspirations for Sarawak.

Admission to the Sarawak Independence Day Summit is strictly by tickets only.

Those who wish to attend will need to register to reserve a seat through WhatsApp by contacting Soo at 014-5950511 on a first come first served basis, as seats are limited. — DayakDaily
