KUCHING, Sept 16: Sarawak’s push towards a green and high-income economy is proof of the State government’s “cakap serupa bikin” (walking the talk) approach, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said Sarawak’s economic development in recent years had been driven by long-term policies under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (Pcds) 2030.
“The economic direction of Sarawak towards a green and sustainable economy is a right policy to elevate Sarawak’s economic status into an advanced and high-income economy,” he said in his Malaysia Day 2026 address at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) tonight.
Abang Johari pointed to Bintulu’s selection as one of 43 Transitioning Industrial Clusters (TIC) worldwide and the first in Malaysia under the World Economic Forum as evidence of Sarawak’s industrial transformation.
While Bintulu is being developed as a centre for industrial transition towards clean energy, he said Tanjung Embang in southern Sarawak was being planned as a low-carbon hub and gateway to a wider economic network.
Supported by a planned international airport and deep-sea port, the Tanjung Embang development is expected to attract an estimated RM100 billion in total investments over the coming decade.
Meanwhile, he said the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) readiness to collaborate with Sarawak could be regarded as recognition of the State’s efforts to develop into a green economy hub in ASEAN and Asia.
He added that Sarawak is strengthening its role in regional energy security through cross-border electricity exports to Kalimantan, alongside expanding grid connections with Sabah and planned supplies to Brunei.
“This shows that Sarawak’s energy is playing an increasingly important role in the development of Borneo and ASEAN,” he said.
He expressed confidence that with close cooperation between the Sarawak government and the federal government, Sarawak could become a developed and high-income region by 2030. — DayakDaily
