KUCHING, June 16: Sarawak is now making significant strides in the energy generation sector, having increased its capacity from just one gigawatt to seven gigawatts (GW).
In a TVS report, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the achievement reflects strong efforts to develop sustainable energy infrastructure, including combined cycle gas projects in Bintulu and Miri, which each contribute one gigawatt.
He also congratulated Sarawak Energy for its meticulous planning to ensure a sufficient and competitive energy supply for both domestic needs and export.
“Sarawak is now in a better position to meet local and international energy demand while focusing on green and renewable energy,” he said after visiting the Baleh Hydroelectric Project (HEP) site in Kapit today.
He added that Sarawak is also actively investing in solar technology in Bakun and Murum, which are each expected to contribute one gigawatt, in addition to exploring the potential of hydrogen energy.
“We are targeting more than 60 to 70 per cent renewable energy in Sarawak’s energy mix by 2030,” he stated.
He added that with these efforts, Sarawak is poised to become a leader in green energy production in Asia, helping to reduce carbon footprints and benefit both the economy and the people. — DayakDaily
