KUCHING, May 1: The Sarawak government is currently engaged in active discussions with the University of Cambridge to secure at least 10 admission slots annually for top-performing students from the State-owned international schools.
In a TVS news report, Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasised that the initiative aims to provide outstanding Sarawakian students with access to world-class education at some of the most prestigious universities globally.
“We are sending our students to international schools, and those who excel in their examinations deserve the opportunity to further their studies at renowned institutions.
“Besides Cambridge, we are also exploring possibilities with other top universities such as Oxford, Harvard, and the London School of Economics (LSE),” he told a press conference following the signing of a strategic service contract between Swinburne Innovation Malaysia (SWIM) and Cambridge University Press & Assessment (CUPA) in Cambridge, United Kingdom on Wednesday (April 30).
Abang Johari explained that the scholarship placements will focus on strategic and high-impact disciplines, as identified by the Sarawak government through the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD).
“This move is critical in building a highly skilled talent pool that can compete on a global scale and drive Sarawak’s new economic agenda,” he stressed.
Also present at the event were Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Deputy Ministers Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee and Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63 and Federal-State Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, and Cambridge International Education Group managing director Rod Smith. — DayakDaily
