Sarawak in talks to boost electricity supply to Kalimantan

KUCHING, March 1: Sarawak Energy Bhd (Sarawak Energy) is currently in negotiations with Indonesia to increase electricity supply to Kalimantan and to discuss a new tariff structure for energy exports to the country.

According to a news report by TVS, Deputy Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications (Utilities) of Sarawak Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, said that the negotiations involve PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), Indonesia’s national energy company, to increase the electricity supply from Sarawak to a wider area in West Kalimantan.

“Among the matters discussed were efforts to enhance the distribution of electricity supply to a larger area in Kalimantan and negotiations regarding tariff rates.

“This discussion is ongoing at the level of Sarawak Energy and PLN,” he was quoted as saying when commenting on his recent visit to Jakarta with a delegation from the Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications and SEB.

During the same visit, the Sarawak delegation also held discussions with PT Kayan Hydropower Nusantara (KHN), the company responsible for developing the hydro dam at Mentarang Induk, North Kalimantan, on collaboration its with Sarawak Energy for the last four years.

Abdul Rahman explained that the hydro dam project is almost complete and discussions will continue to ensure its smooth implementation.

He further shared that the Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, intends to hold a meeting with the Sarawak government in Kuching to discuss further cooperation in the energy sector.

“He is very welcoming and intends to come to Kuching to discuss with the Sarawak Government regarding collaboration in energy development and other resources, particularly involving the states and countries in the Borneo Archipelago, including Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei, and Kalimantan.

“That is the matter that has been discussed in Indonesia,” he said. – DayakDaily
