KUCHING, June 27: The Sarawak Hornbill Team Cup 2023 competition is the best platform for discovering young bowling talents, says Youth, Sports, And Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah
Abdul Karim, who is also Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts (MTCP) Minister, said this during the Sarawak Hornbill Team Cup 2023 press conference held today at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre here.
“This competition is able to discover new talent and expand the pool of athletes, particularly among Sarawak’s schoolchildren.
“And for Sarawak to advance in bowling and other sports, the State must have elite athletes prepared to represent it,” he said.
He noted that when a competition like Sarawak Hornbill Team Cup 2023 is held, it can also attract foreign tourists to visit the State, particularly after the organisation of the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) 2023, which was celebrated with great enthusiasm.
“When a competition of this nature is held, we have the opportunity to advance the tourism industry in addition to improving the sport of ten-pin bowling for ten-pin bowling athletes from Sarawak, other states, or competing teams.
“This is an excellent opportunity to boost the tourism industry, as visitors will also stop at interesting locations in and around Kuching and purchase local goods,” he added.
In addition, Abdul Karim stated that one of the goals of the Sarawak Hornbill Team Cup 2023 is to promote the ten-pin bowling in the State and place Sarawak on international bowling and tourism maps.
“We wish to promote Sarawak as a centre for ten-pin bowling, and Megalanes Batu Kawah is one of the best training facilities in Southeast Asia.
“It is also an opportunity for the states of Malaysia to prepare their athletes for Sukma (Malaysia Games) 2024. So it’s like a pre-Sukma trial run,” he remarked.
The Sarawak Hornbill Team Cup 2023 will be held from July 3 to July 9 at Megalanes Sarawak, Batu Kawah here.
The competition will feature 36 teams from Sarawak, Sabah, Penang, Selangor, and Kuala Lumpur. — DayakDaily
