KUCHING, Aug 7: Sarawak is ready to offer capable leaders to serve as Malaysia’s next Prime Minister when the time comes, with Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg both seen as qualified and competent candidates, said Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

“Fadillah is already qualified based on his leadership and performance. If the opportunity arises, Sarawak is ready,” he said during the Interviu x Podcast Sinar Harian programme titled ‘Perspektif Politik dari Bumi Kenyalang: Suara Timur Malaysia’, which aired live today on Sinar Harian’s YouTube channel.

Nanta, who is also Kapit assemblyman, stressed that Sarawak has long produced strong, visionary leaders and is fully prepared to take on greater responsibility at the national level if required.

At the same time, Nanta dismissed recent calls by the Opposition for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to step down, stating that such demands are unjustified and premature.

“It’s not appropriate to ask the Prime Minister to resign at this point. The Madani government is only halfway through its term. Let him carry out his plans and reforms,” he said.

He pointed out that the Madani government under Anwar has already made progress in implementing reforms, improving governance, and managing the economy despite numerous global and domestic challenges.

“Managing the economy is not easy, especially when facing external threats such as recent US tariff hikes. Yet, we have managed to navigate through these issues with balanced policies,” he explained.

Nanta acknowledged that while certain reforms, such as rationalising subsidies, are necessary and “economically sound”, they may be “politically risky”.

“Subsidy restructuring is needed so that only the truly deserving receive support. But politically, it is difficult because even those who are not eligible will object when benefits are withdrawn,” he added.

Nonetheless, he expressed confidence that the government is on the right track and urged all parties to put aside excessive politicking to ensure national stability.

“Let’s support the Prime Minister and give him the space and time to rebuild the country. We must work together to move the nation forward,” he said. — DayakDaily
