KUCHING, July 1: The Sarawak government should recall retired teachers and staff to teach to combat the shortage of teachers, especially in rural areas, says Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) president Voon Lee Shan.

He said this in a statement yesterday (June 30) in response to the issue of shortage of teachers and dilapidated schools in the region.

“It is not difficult to solve the shortage of teachers if we are serious to see our children are educated,” said Voon.

He opined it is a pity to see many students unable to excel in school due to them dropping out before completing their secondary education.

In regards to dilapidated schools, Voon said that the Sarawak government should slow down their pursuit of mega projects and buildings, especially prayer houses in cities and towns.

“The money for mega projects and huge government buildings should be channelled to build and repair schools,” he said.

In his opinion, the number of mega projects takes up too much development funds which could instead be reserved for schools.

He questioned why Sarawak should have mega government buildings in Petra Jaya while school children are suffering for a better education.

“The government should understand no country can prosper when their citizens are uneducated. If a country’s citizens are uneducated or receive the wrong education, the country cannot progress and its people will be poor,” he said. — DayakDaily
