KUCHING, May 19: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has earned high praise from Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar for his visionary leadership in steering Sarawak through global economic challenges and elevating its position internationally.
Delivering his opening address at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today, Wan Junaidi applauded the Premier’s recent working visit to Europe, which resulted in strategic partnerships and international collaborations.
“Congratulations to the Premier for achieving numerous successes during his recent working visit to Europe.
“I believe these accomplishments stem from carefully planned strategic collaborations following his courtesy visits and discussions with ambassadors and European companies,” he said.
Among the key achievements, Wan Junaidi cited the launch of an AI-based power converter in the United Kingdom as a testament to Sarawak’s growing expertise in artificial intelligence and digital transformation.
He also lauded Abang Johari’s efforts in boosting Sarawak’s aerospace ambitions following strategic engagements with Avions de Transport Regional (ATR) and Airbus at their headquarters in Toulouse, France.
“I am confident these efforts will reduce our dependence on natural resources, diversify economic activities, and create greater value, while paving the way for new, sustainable and inclusive economic growth in line with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030,” he added.
Wan Junaidi further highlighted Sarawak’s strong progress in the green energy transition, including initiatives to position the State as the ‘Battery of ASEAN’ through renewable energy development.
He acknowledged the successful export of Sarawak Petchem’s first methanol shipment to China, the launch of the Green Methanol Project to increase low-carbon fuel production, and the implementation of waste-to-energy initiatives as part of sustainable waste management.
On human capital development, he commended the Sarawak government’s commitment to strengthening a skilled and future-ready workforce.
This includes the establishment of State-owned international schools and technical and vocational institutions, as well as the provision of free tertiary education in selected fields for Sarawakians beginning next year. — DayakDaily
