KUCHING, Feb 22: Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah will meet with federal Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh on Feb 26 to discuss the framework and preparations that Sarawak needs to make as one of the three co-host states, besides Kuala Lumpur and Penang, for the 2027 SEA Games.
According to TVS, Abdul Karim said Sarawak is prepared and confident in its capabilities to co-host the international sporting event.
“We cannot just be daring in organising events at the State level. We must be able to organise world-class tournaments. Only in this way can we prove that Sarawak has reached the level of a sports powerhouse in Malaysia,” he said.
He said this during a dinner programme organised by the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak here last night (Feb 21).
In his speech, Abdul Karim also said that Sarawak is ready to defend its title as the overall Malaysian Games (Sukma) champion in the upcoming 2026 edition in Selangor, which he sees as a challenge for the State contingent.
“Next year, Sukma will take place in Selangor, and this is our main challenge. Last year, after 33 years, we managed to bring home the title as overall champion.
“If we prepare well, I believe that wherever Sarawakian athletes are competing in, we can be successful,” said Abdul Karim, who is also the Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Sarawak.
The dinner saw 25 staff from the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak receiving awards for their services in 2024.
It also celebrated 12 retired staff members and four who transferred to other departments. — DayakDaily
