KUCHING, Nov 29: The Sarawak government is exploring the idea of establishing a single transport authority to enhance the efficiency of its transportation management and coordination, ensuring that public services meet the demands of the people.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed that, as part of its strategic initiatives, the State government is examining the Land Transport Authority (LTA) model implemented in Singapore.
“This Authority plans and manages the whole of Singapore’s public transportation system through active private sector participation.
“Transformation of our transport sector must be managed through a holistic and integrated approach,” he said when delivering his ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today.
Abang Johari highlighted the progress of the autonomous rapid transit (ART) powered by green hydrogen under the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) is on the right track.
He added the ART is currently undergoing a proof-of-concept (POC) exercise until Dec 15, 2023.
Noting the recent contract award for the Blue Line, which marks the commencement of extensive construction activities for the ART project, he expressed confidence that the Kuching ART would be completed as scheduled and operational by the fourth quarter of 2025.
In addition to the Kuching project, Abang Johari revealed plans for an ART project in Bintulu.
Emphasising the alignment of Sarawak’s initiative to use green hydrogen in public transport with the United Nations (UN) goal of combating climate change and achieving a Zero Carbon Emission target by 2050, he referenced praise received from Her Excellency Karima El Korri, the UN’s representative, during the 2023 National Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Council Meeting. — DayakDaily
