KUCHING, Nov 11: Sarawak is exploring collaboration opportunities with Japan in the field of fusion energy, following Japan’s successful test of the breakthrough technology in July this year.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who earlier today received The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star from Emperor Naruhito at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, revealed that discussions on the potential partnership were held with the president of the Japan Malaysia Association during his visit.

“Yesterday, I discussed the matter with the President of the Japan Malaysia Association, who will present it to the Prime Minister of Japan.

“I will also bring this up with the Prime Minister of Malaysia (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) to explore the potential for cooperation in fusion energy. We want to pursue this new energy source together with Japan as part of Sarawak’s green economy agenda,” he told Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) and TVS during a press conference after the ceremony.

Abang Johari emphasised that the initiative aligns with Sarawak’s long-term vision to develop a new economy driven by innovation, technology, and sustainable energy resources.

Moreover, he noted that the international recognition reflects global acknowledgment of Sarawak’s success in implementing progressive development policies, particularly in pioneering new sectors that prioritise environmental sustainability and the well-being of its people.

“What is important is that they recognise Sarawak’s progress towards a new economy in this new era.

“We are among the regions pursuing policies that champion environmental sustainability while improving people’s livelihoods,” he said. — DayakDaily
