KUCHING, Oct 9: A Sarawak delegation led by Deputy State Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Dato Sri Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel is on a technical mission to Copenhagen, Denmark to explore advanced technologies in hydrogen and green methanol production as part of Sarawak’s effort to drive its sustainable petrochemical and bunkering agenda.

The delegation, which includes Sarawak Petchem Sdn Bhd chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain and representatives from Sarawak Petchem, held two key engagements with global leaders in clean energy technology—Topsoe and Carbon Recycling International (CRI).

During the visit to Topsoe’s Solid Oxide Electrolyser Cell (SOEC) facility, the team was briefed on high-efficiency hydrogen production through high-temperature electrolysis.

Topsoe’s SOEC technology is known for its improved efficiency and reduced power consumption compared to conventional electrolysers, marking a potential breakthrough in green hydrogen generation.

The meeting was hosted by Topsoe’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Elena Scaltritti, and Chief Commercial Officer (Power-to-X), Sundus Cordelia Ramli, alongside the company’s technical representatives.

Muhammad Abdullah said the visit marks a key milestone in Sarawak Petchem’s evaluation of electrolyser technologies for its upcoming Low Carbon and Green Methanol projects.

“Sarawak continues to explore and embrace cutting-edge technologies to strengthen its leadership in the sustainable economy.

“Collaboration with global technology leaders like Topsoe enables us to identify the most efficient and sustainable pathways to realise Sarawak’s vision in the renewable economy,” he said in a press release.

The delegation also held fruitful discussions with Carbon Recycling International (CRI), the world’s first company to produce green methanol using captured carbon dioxide and green hydrogen.

CRI’s Chief Executive Officer, Lotte Rosenberg, and Head of Business Development, Oliver Vindex Nielsen, received the delegation and discussed potential collaboration in developing Sarawak’s planned green methanol plant through Sarawak Petchem.

Muhammad Abdullah said Sarawak seeks to learn from CRI’s pioneering experience in green methanol project development to ensure the success of its own initiative in supporting sustainable bunkering solutions in Bintulu.

In response, CRI expressed full support for Sarawak’s efforts and commended the State’s strong commitment to advancing global energy transition goals. — DayakDaily
