KUCHING, June 21: The Ministry of Transport (MOTS) Sarawak is expanding an 18,000 square feet area at Kuching International Airport (KIA) to boost air cargo handling capacity, following a 23.3 per cent increase in cargo volume in the first quarter of 2025.

The redevelopment includes enhancements to lorry parking bays, cargo docks, rest areas, support facilities, and special operating zone for DHL to meet growing logistics demands.

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin emphasised that the KIA Cargo Terminal Redevelopment Plan addresses critical challenges such as congestion, limited workspace, and security compliance.

“A dedicated operating zone for DHL will also be developed as part of the plan, alongside full adherence to Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) safety standards

“This move will not only increase cargo capacity and safety, but also improve the overall experience of logistics operators,” he said during the Hexagon Highs 20th Anniversary Dinner at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Friday (June 20).

He revealed that Sarawak recorded a total of 14,438 tonnes in air cargo handling in first quarter of 2025—up from 11,072 tonnes in the same period last year—underscoring the urgency to improve infrastructure and operations.

“The logistics sector is the backbone of trade and investment, and a key driver of economic transformation for Sarawak.

“We are committed to developing a modern, efficient, and cost-effective logistics ecosystem across land, sea and air, including better first- and last-mile connectivity,” he added.

Lee reiterated Sarawak’s vision to position itself as a regional logistics hub through strategic partnerships and continuous infrastructure upgrades.

While KIA’s redevelopment is a major step, he stressed that the transformation effort extends far beyond, with MOTS rolling out initiatives to enhance the Sarawak’s overall logistics competitiveness in the region.
