ABU DHABI, Nov 7: Sarawak Energy Berhad’s (Sarawak Energy) appointment as a global patron of the World Energy Council (WEC) is a testament to the world’s recognition of Sarawak’s efficient management of its renewable energy resources.

According to a report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said in addition to having access to renewable energy sources, Sarawak’s strong governance aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), has earned global confidence in the State’s efforts.

“We are fortunate they have confidence in us by appointing Sarawak Energy as a patron of the WEC.

“This is very significant. It means the world recognises how Sarawak manages energy, how we produce it, and for the long-term benefit of Sarawak and Malaysia in playing a role in the new energy transition,” he said in a special interview with UKAS and TVS after participating as a guest panellist in a discussion session at the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition & Conference (ADIPEC) 2024 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) yesterday (Nov 6).

Accompanying the Sarawak Premier were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Minister of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (MEESty) Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh, Sarawak Energy chairman Datuk Ibrahim Baki, and other senior Sarawak government officials.

Notably, Sarawak Energy was officially appointed as a WEC patron on March 29, 2024, making it the first from Southeast Asia to join the ranks of patrons from America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

As part of this role, Sarawak Energy, a leading hydro energy developer in Southeast Asia, will support WEC’s mission to drive the global energy transition.

Meanwhile, Abang Johari stated that Sarawak’s proactive approach to renewable energy would broaden its economic resources.

He explained that this would attract investors to Sarawak, assured by the state’s dependable energy supply.

“As this unfolds, it will pave the way for investors to come to Sarawak and set up operations here.

“This will generate new job opportunities and sources of income,” he said. — DayakDaily
