KUCHING, Sept 18: Sarawak Energy Berhad (Sarawak Energy) recently awarded Academic Excellence Incentives to 44 outstanding students from SMK Belaga and SMK Bakun in Belaga for their outstanding performance in the 2022 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examinations.
According to a press release issued by Sarawak Energy today, among the recipients were SMK Belaga student Angeline Emai Beru who was the top performer in the 2022 STPM examinations with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.83. She was one of 14 STPM candidates from her school who performed exceptionally well.
Meanwhile, in the SPM category, 30 students, including eight from SMK Belaga and 22 from SMK Bakun, achieved outstanding results, including Evonne Wong Ing Yen, who earned eight As.
During the award ceremony at Dewan Sri Jayong in SMK Belaga on Aug 17, Sarawak Energy’s general manager for Social Impact Management and Corporate Social Responsibility, Jiwari Abdullah, said the energy developer has invested more than RM100,000 in the programme to motivate students to excel in their academic pursuits.
About 298 students have benefited from the programme to date.
The press release also revealed that the incentives were presented to the students and their representatives by the event’s guest-of-honour, Beatrice Kedoh Tajang, who is a political secretary to the Premier of Sarawak.
She was representing Sarawak Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunications-cum-Belaga assemblyman Datuk Liwan Lagang.
Also present at the event were Belaga District Office representative Zain Rocky; Belaga District education officer Thomas Uning; SMK Belaga principal Usat Ibut; SMK Bakun acting principal Boniface Ulok; community leader Temenggong Ajang Sirek, teachers, parents, and students.
Sarawak Energy’s representatives at the event included Jiwari, Bakun Station senior engineer Aminuddin Abdul Kadir; principal consultant for Stakeholders Relations—Community in SIM and CSR, Augustine Supen Taja; and employees from the Bakun and Murum Stations.
Sarawak Energy said it was dedicated to investing in human capital, recognising that education is the cornerstone of community development and sustainable growth.
“The Group is committed to enriching the future of young minds in the Belaga district, the home to its Bakun and Murum hydropower facilities. Since 2017, Sarawak Energy’s educational programme aims to inspire students and cultivate academic excellence within the local communities.
“Following the ceremony, a tree-planting activity was conducted on the school’s grounds.
“This aligned with Sarawak Energy’s commitment to promoting sustainability and raising awareness about carbon control by increasing the number of trees on earth as part of Sarawak Energy’s 10-year campaign to plant and protect 500,000 trees by 2030,” Sarawak Energy added. — DayakDaily
