KUCHING, June 6: The newly inaugurated Sarawak Electrolyser Assembly and Distribution Facility (SEA-DF) aims to ramp up its electrolyser capacity from the current 50 megawatt (MW) per year to 500MW per year within the next five years.

Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Husain emphasised that the facility has received increased orders for its electrolysers, while it is preparing to ship three units overseas by the end of the year.

“There are a lot of demand for the electrolysers as the world capacity to produce Electrolyser is limited. With increased capacity in this facility, we can meet the global demand.

“This plant can go up to 75MW but our target is to reach 500MW per year,” he told a press conference after the launching of the SEA-DF at Demak Laut Industrial Park by Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today.

As a rule of thumb, PETRONAS Iban scientist Colin Patrick explained that the 50MW electrolyser can produce about 25 tonnes of hydrogen.

Earlier on, Abdul Aziz affirmed that SEDC Energy together with PETRONAS, Lestari H2GaaS, Gentari and other international partners are not only pushing the boundaries of technology but also setting new standards in the clean energy sector.

For the newly launched facility, he said SEDC Energy will be working together with its partners to produce electrolysers to meet the growing demands for hydrogen.

“For a start, this facility with a capacity of 50MW per year will first meet the local demand here in Sarawak.

“This facility will further enhance Sarawak’s capacity to produce and distribute hydrogen, a key component in the global shift towards clean new energy sources.”

Abdul Aziz further pointed out that the facility not only contributes to Sarawak’s energy security but also creates numerous high-quality jobs, stimulates local economies, and attracts further investments in clean technologies.

Through initiatives like these, he said, Sarawak will remain competitive and forward-thinking in the evolving global energy landscape.

“Our vision for Sarawak is to become the hub of clean energy innovation and SEA-DF is a testament to our commitment to this vision, which I believe all Sarawakians can be proud off, as we are among those who are ahead of our peers in such transformative efforts in this region,” he added. — DayakDaily
