KUCHING, July 10: Sarawak DanceSport athletes Amy Kho Yien Xing, Eunice Ling, and Cordelia Wee, accompanied by coach Cindy Chung, kept the Malaysian flag flying high at the 3rd Hanoi Stars Open, held at the Tay Ho District Gymnasium in Hanoi from July 8 to 9, 2023, with podium finishes of three golds and three bronzes.
According to a press release from the Sarawak DanceSport Association (SDA), in addition to the host nation of Vietnam, contestants came from Malaysia, Korea, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, the Philippines, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.
“Amy Kho showed her dance prowess and potential to emerge champion in both the Adult Solo Open Latin and Adult Solo Grade C Open Latin categories, with Cordelia Wee taking bronzes in the same categories.
“Eunice Ling grabbed the gold in Junior Solo Grade C Open and bronze in Youth Solo Grade C Open. Eunice also finished 5th in the Junior Solo Grade A Open.
“Meanwhile, two other younger Sarawak dancers, Valery Chung and Erin Ung, only made it to the semi-finals and quarter-finals in the Junior and Juvenile categories, respectively,” the press release stated.
Moreover, the dancers’ coach and team manager, Cindy Chung, who went on the trip with the five Sarawak dancers who train at the Kuching-based Russell & Randell Dance Company, was thrilled by their successes.
“Cindy remarked that before the competition, the team also attended the three-day Asia Dance Camp in Hanoi, and it was certainly a good experience for the dancers who were kept on their toes the whole day on the dance floor.”
Meanwhile, SDA president Chester Lim expressed delight with the achievements and appreciation to the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development, Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC), Sarawak State Sports Council, and Sarawak Youth and Sports Department for their support. — DayakDaily
