KUCHING, March 3: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) Sarawak has successfully dismantled a drug smuggling syndicate, seizing 5,280 grammes of cannabis, worth approximately RM158,340, concealed in wrappers resembling ‘Diary Milk’ chocolates.
According to a news report by TVS, Sarawak Customs director Norizan Yahya said that the breakthrough came after a team of customs officers from the Narcotics Branch, and the Enforcement Division’s ground operations unit arrested a man claiming a courier package at a courier company located on Jalan Lee Ling, Kuching, at 11am on Jan 22.
“The team conducted an inspection of the contents of the courier package and found 25 packets of dangerous drugs, specifically cannabis, wrapped in ‘Diary Milk’ chocolate wrappers.
“The modus operandi used was distributing narcotic substances using courier services from Peninsular Malaysia to Sarawak via air mode, declaring the goods as ‘merchandise’ to avoid detection by the authorities,” Norizan said.
The case is currently under investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
In this regard, he urged the public to assist the JKDM in combating smuggling crimes, particularly cigarettes, alcoholic beverages, firecrackers, drugs, vehicles, and others. He also advised against participating in such illegal activities.
“Smuggling not only harms the country in terms of revenue loss, but it also poses a threat to national security and the welfare of the people,” he said.
JKDM also encouraged the public to provide information relating to any smuggling activities by contacting the Customs Free Toll Line 1-800-88-8855 or the nearest Customs Office in all states and assures that the identity of each informant will be kept confidential. – DayakDaily
