KUCHING, July 21: The Civil Defence Force (APM) Sarawak has received eight out of 15 four-wheel drive (4WD) ambulances, which will be deployed for rescue missions, and to efficiently and effectively serve rural areas in the region where regular ambulances cannot reach.
Applauding this initiative, Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg noted that the specially-designed life saving vehicles are necessary, given the challenging geographical landscape of rural and remote areas in Sarawak.
“These ambulances will enable the defence force to deliver better services in disaster management, particularly in rural districts.
“Therefore, the distribution of these assets by APM must carefully consider various aspects, such as geography and disaster statistics in each district,” he said in his text-of-speech read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas at the ceremony to hand over of 4WD ambulance and presentation of letters of appointment to the APM Sarawak held at its headquarters, Jalan Diplomatik here today.
The remaining seven 4WD ambulances are in transit and will arrive soon to bolster the emergency response capabilities.
The ceremony also witnessed the appointment of nine associate officers from diverse professions to enhance APM Sarawak’s disaster management services.
Abang Johari hopes these appointments will further facilitate the force in their crucial tasks.
“The Sarawak government will support and assist any initiatives by APM Sarawak for the good and betterment of the public and the community,” he said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah, Sarawak Affairs and Special Functions) Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong emphasised that associate officers play important role in facilitating the APM to train more individuals in civil defense and disaster management.
“APM Sarawak continuously provide training to voluntary members in efforts to strengthen their ability to handle disasters more effectively,” he added.
